‘The exhibition of Atelier NL’
In the Dutch Design week 2010, the design duo Atelier NL planned to show the recent project ‘Sand’ which they launched on the summer. ’Sand’ is the following series of the excursions in pursuit of materials, from the project ‘Soil’.
This time, the designers gathered soil from more than 30 plots around
The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France to create glass, in a long trip by camping car in last summer. I designed a map that indicates those spots and route of the trip, in a image of classical feeling as might be seen in elementary school olden times.

2010年のオランダデザインウィークで、デザインデュオのAtelier NLはその夏に開始したプロジェクト’sand’を見せる計画をした。’sand’ は、彼らの’soil’プロジェクトに次ぐ、素材に対する探求の第二弾である。
今回彼らは砂からガラスをつくるため、オランダ、ベルギー、ドイツ、フランスをキャンピングカーで旅をしながら30種以上の砂をあつめた。私は、その旅の道筋と砂が採取された位置などを示す地図をデザインした。昔小学校にあったようなイメージだ。

Originally, glass making was introduced to the Northern Europe by Roman who invented the method of glass blowing. 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　もともと、ガラス業は吹きガラスの手法を開発したローマ人によって、北ヨーロッパにもたらされた。

Roman people analyzed the geological features of every land where they reached in order to know which kind of industry or agriculture fit to, and they studied the soil of land for establishing glass factories as well. 　　　　　ローマ人は、自分たちがたどりつき開拓する土地ごとに、そこでどういった農業工業が適するかを把握するため、地質を分析しており、ガラス工房をつくるにもまずその土地の砂を研究したようだ。

Although they had an expectation for them to show more wider variation such as hues, shrinkage and the depth of colors like the project of making ceramics from soil, 　　もともと彼らは‘土から陶器を作ったプロジェクト’の時のように、砂をガラスにしたら色相、色の濃さ、伸縮にバリエーションがでてくるのでは？ という期待があったそうだ。

only the depth of the same olive green as original color of glass appeared by reflecting the component of quartz in each sand as result. However, it is a kind of the things that can be taken only by the actual trial. 　　　　　　　しかし、実際は砂に含まれる石英の割合による、ガラス本来のオリーブグリーン色の濃さという点にだけ違いが現れた。しかしそれは、実際に試してみてようやくわかる結果であった。

This sand journey was proceeded with gathering information about glass. One day, they began to aware that they were following the Roman road.　 　　　　　この砂を巡る旅は、ガラスにまつわる資料を集めながら進められた。そして彼らは次第に自分たちの辿っている場所がローマンロードにそっていることに気がつき始めたそうだ。

The designers organized the display so that visitors could take them in hand and see the difference of color between them which were resulted by the difference of each spot. 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　来場者がガラスを手に取って、砂の採取された場所によってその色みが異なることを見ることができるような展示とした。
